WELCOME TO ROATAN 2017
AIDA FREEDIVING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

CarlaSue Hanson

President AIDA International

Dear Freedivers, On behalf of Aida International, I would like to welcome you to the 2017 Depth World Championships.
We are pleased to be supporting this event, which is hosted by the Roatan Freediving School and Training Center under the direction of Esteban Darhanpé. The competition is receiving special sponsorship from the Honduran Tourism Institute and we are very grateful for their efforts to make this event a huge success.
Roatan is a beautiful island with lush vegetation, warm, clear, water and unique diving opportunities. The site of the competition is very close to shore and just past an outstanding reef in a nature reserve, which is a haven for turtles, parrotfish, and many other species of sea life. There is also an area where one can dive with the local sharks!
Mr. Darhanpé has enlisted the sponsorship of an outstanding resort to host the event with ocean-view rooms and abundant tropical food offerings. There are also lower-cost accommodations available in the surrounding area. The headquarters for the competition will be at the very convenient Beach Club, next to the hotel.
2017 marks the 25th Anniversary of Aida International and we want you all to join us to celebrate. It is opportunity that you will not want to miss! Please feel free to contact us at Aida if you have any questions. See you in August!

Esteban Darhanpé

Organizer of 2017 AIDA World Championship.

Freediving is a fascinating sport through which human potential is being discovered. It transcends the sports field to integrate the scientific, artistic and spiritual. It sensitizes and makes us aware of the need to preserve our seas and oceans, on which humanity depends.
Organizing the AIDA 2017 World Championship in Roatán is a great honor that entails a huge responsibility. I would especially like to thank all the national AIDAs and AIDA International for entrusting us with this task; to the Institute of Tourism of Honduras; Municipality of Roatan; Mayan Princess resort and the community of Roatan for providing the necessary support for the realization of this event.
Athletes; coaches; AIDA representatives; sponsors; families; friends from all over the world, Roatán Freediving School & Training Center welcomes you to the 2017 AIDA Depth World Championship.

By the way, Honduras means depth.

Legend has it that when Christopher Columbus finally reached Central America, specifically the Caribbean waters of Honduras, he expressed gratitude by saying:

“Gracias a Dios por estas Honduras / Thank God for these deep waters."
